It is only the first week of the new year, but it is never too late to start planning your next getaway. But where should you go? Near, far, or far, far away?

For some destinations, it is simply a matter of the timing.

This month, up to 80 million Hindu pilgrims are expected to descend on Allahabad, in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, for Maha Kumbh Mela. Considered the world's largest religious festival, the rituals in Allahabad are only held every 12 years.

There is also Londonderry, or Derry, in Northern Ireland, designated the first UK City of Culture. To mark the occasion, 140 cultural events will be held over the course of the year. These are expected to attract more than a million visitors.
