SEOUL (AFP) - A South Korean pilot was missing Thursday after a military jet trainer crashed in the country's northeast, police said.

The Black Eagle aircraft hit the side of a mountain in Hoengseong county on Thursday morning, a local police officer told AFP by telephone.

"Witnesses said they saw a parachute falling from the sky ... search operations are underway to find the pilot," he said.

It was not immediately clear how many were on board and what caused the accident. A defence ministry spokesman said investigations were underway.
