BEIJING - Outgoing President Hu Jintao has got his wish granted in leaving a permanent legacy, by having his signature ideology promoted in the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) constitution.

Some 2.200 delegates voted in approval at the closing of the 18th Party Congress on Wednesday of changes in the party charter to describe Mr Hu's "scientific development view" as a guiding principle.

The move now places the ideology, which describes sustainable development and social harmony, on the same status as other ideologies espoused by previous CCP chiefs Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping and Jiang Zemin.

Observers have predicted that Mr Hu would get his wish granted only because a change in the party charter would mean little in reality to his successors.
