NEW DELHI (AFP) - A leader of India's ruling Congress party has hinted at a possible cabinet, or other senior, position by the end of this month for Mr Rahul Gandhi, the scion of India's Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty.

Mr Gandhi is the son, grandson and great-grandson of Indian premiers but he has repeatedly turned down invitations to join the government. His mother, Sonia, is head of the Congress party. The media-shy bachelor currently serves as a member of parliament and head of the Congress party youth wing.

In a televised interview on Thursday, senior Congress figure Digvijay Singh said the 42-year-old "will be coming for a much more active role in the mainstream of Congress politics."

"Just wait for the 15 days and you shall see," Mr Singh, who is close to the Gandhi family, told Headlines Today.
