An elephant that fell into marshland on the banks of the Vembanad Lake in India on Tuesday has died, despite an intense six-hour rescue operation.

Dramatic pictures show Ayyappan the elephant looking lifeless in the marshland located on the outskirts of Kochi's southern Indian city before a mahout climbed on top of the animal to tie a rope around it.

Bystanders then helped to haul the elephant to safe ground.

The pachyderm was then administered glucose by a veterinarian but it still died.

It is unclear how Ayyappan landed in the marshland.
