BEIJING (AP) - Chinese authorities say five workers were killed and 18 injured in Shanghai at a construction site for a parking lot being built to support a new metro line.

Shanghai's Work Safety Administration said on its microblog that a concrete structure at the parking lot in the eastern district of Pudong collapsed about 9pm on New Year's Eve.

Chinese state media say the cause of the collapse remains under investigation.

Safety at construction sites remains a challenge in China, where regulations are often ignored.
