China to hold trial of ex-police chief on Tuesday

BEIJING - Former Chongqing police chief Wang Lijun, who sparked China's biggest political crisis in decades, will stand trial on Tuesday, Sept 18, for charges including defection and bribery.
The trial will take place in Chengdu, where Wang had sought asylum at a United States (US) consulate and ratted on how Gu Kailai, the wife of then-Chongqing boss Bo Xilai, killed a Briton.
When contacted on Friday, an official from the Chengdu Intermediate People's Court confirmed the trial date but declined comment on other queries like the trial length.
Like Gu's murder trial and subsequent conviction in August, Mr Wang's case will be closely watched for clues on how the Communist Party would handle Mr Bo as it gears up for a leadership change.
