China calls for exchange of offices with Taiwan
BEIJING (AP) - Beijing has renewed calls for China and longtime rival Taiwan to set up representative offices in each other's capitals, but says sticky problems still need to be resolved for that to happen.
The spokesman for the government's Taiwan Affairs Office, Mr Yang Yi, said on Friday that negotiators late last month managed to resolve some technical language issues. But he told reporters that other "left-over problems" weren't discussed.
Taiwan and China split amid civil war in 1949, but Beijing has threatened to bring the island back under its control by force.
Tensions have eased in recent years, prompting calls for some sort of permanent offices to be set up in each other's capitals.
