PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AFP) - A bomb ripped through a van in Pakistan's north-western city of Peshawar on Wednesday, killing eight people and wounding more than 20, police said.

Officers said it was not immediately clear whether the bomb was planted in the van or at the roadside.

"According to initial reports, eight people were killed and 22 were injured in the blast," senior police official Mr Tahir Ayub said.

Peshawar is the main city in Pakistan's restive north-west, in whose lawless tribal areas bordering Afghanistan, Taliban and Al-Qaeda militants have strongholds, and bomb attacks are common.
