Bangladesh, Russia sign $1.2 billion defence deal

DHAKA (AP) - Bangladesh has signed a US$1 billion (S$1.2 billion) agreement with Russia to buy military equipment and arms from Russia.

A government official said on Wednesday that Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Russian President Vladimir Putin witnessed the signing of the agreement at the Kremlin in Moscow on Tuesday.

Ms Hasina's Special Assistant for Media Mahbubul Hoque Shakil told The Associated Press that the arms purchase agreement includes orders for armored vehicles and infantry weapons, air defense systems and transport helicopters.

He says under other deals Russia will also provide US$500 million to finance construction of the country's first nuclear power plant with the capacity of producing 2,000 megawatts of electricity.
