TOKYO (AFP) - The United States will stand by Japan, Vice President Joe Biden said on Tuesday, as a dispute with China threatens to degenerate into armed confrontation.

"We will remain steadfast in our alliance's commitment," Mr Biden told reporters during a joint press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
