Tokyo to appeal for safety in 2020 Olympic Games

TOKYO (AP) - Tokyo has welcomed the International Olympic Committee's evaluation of its bid for the 2020 Olympics and vowed to stress the city's reputation for safety in the final months of the race against rivals Istanbul and Madrid.

Tokyo Governor Naoki Inose says the IOC report gave high marks to the city's safety, strong financial base, public transportation and compact venue plan.

He says Tokyo will focus on its safety and overall reliability ahead of the Sept 7 IOC vote in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The IOC evaluation report issued on Tuesday did not rank the cities. It was prepared for IOC members ahead of a briefing by the bid cities next week in Lausanne, Switzerland.
