Trekkers scuffle; Journalist performs life-saving brain operation

Trekkers scuffle

KATHMANDU - Trekkers stranded by an avalanche, many of them from Israel, fought for food and places on rescue helicopters after being denied shelter by locals in the aftermath of an earthquake that killed more than 5,000 people.

Up to 250 people were feared missing after an avalanche on Tuesday hit a village in Langtang, a national park north of Kathmandu. In the event, there were no confirmed deaths or serious injuries.

Life-saving op

KATHMANDU - Doctors in quake-hit Nepal were so short-handed that they asked a foreign journalist to help them with brain surgery. CNN's medical correspondent Dr Sanjay Gupta, a neurosurgeon, successfully completed the surgery using rudimentary equipment.

He performed a craniotomy on eight-year- old Selena Dohal to remove blood that had collected in her brain.
