Monsoon season has left much of western India under water, with heavier than normal rains forcing the evacuation of homes and closure of businesses.

Heavy rains in Thane district of India's western Maharashtra state inundated various parts of the district bringing normal life to an abrupt halt on Tuesday (July 21).

Several low-lying areas in Thane's Bhiwandi town were submerged in water, forcing the authorities to shut down schools. Commuters were left stranded as public transport, including buses and trains, were disrupted due to water logging of roads and railway tracks.

Over the last 24 hours, Thane has reportedly received 143 mm of rainfall and heavy rains are likely to continue in the district over the next 24 hours.
