A selfie, come hell or high water

Mumbai has banned selfies in many parts of the city, due to safety risks, after 19 people died taking selfies in India since 2014.

But that did not stop these intrepid selfie aficionados from doing just that at the Bandra Fort Band Stand, a famous tourist spot facing the Arabian Sea in Mumbai, India, on Thursday.

Police say they have pinpointed locations around Mumbai where they want to "restrain" people from taking selfies in an effort to prevent further casualties.

A string of incidents has made India a world leader in selfie-related deaths. Out of the 49 fatalities over three years worldwide, India accounted for 19, or nearly 40 per cent.

Last month, a teenager in Chennai died after he was run over by a speeding train when he tried to take a selfie in front of it.
