4 schoolboys arrested over alleged rape

MUMBAI • Four schoolboys in the western Indian city of Mumbai have been arrested for allegedly gang-raping their classmate, filming the horrific assault and circulating the video, reported the BBC.

The boys are reported to be between 15 and 16 years old. One of the accused and the alleged victim live in the same area and would study together. He invited her to study on Nov 8 and raped her with his accomplices, senior police officer Shashank Sandbhor told the BBC.

"The boys threatened... they would upload the video on social media and raped her on several occasions..." he added. They "uploaded the video on WhatsApp" where it went viral. On Wednesday, the girl's aunt was sent the video, and got the victim to reveal what had happened, police said.

Separately, India Today said a three-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a youth, her neighbour, on Thursday near Bidadi, 32km from Bangalore. There has been much debate on India's sexual assault laws with the pending release of one of the attackers in the high-profile 2012 Delhi gang-rape case.
