KUALA LUMPUR • One person died after the collapse yesterday of a pedestrian bridge under construction at KL Eco City.

The Malay Mail said SP Setia, developer of the KL Eco City, confirmed a worker died yesterday in the accident. The bridge was to link its project to The Gardens shopping mall at Mid Valley on the other side of a canal.

"SP Setia confirms that an incident had occurred at the Abdullah Hukum project site. At approximately 3.30pm, the pedestrian link to Mid Valley which is still under construction gave way," it said in a statement to Malay Mail Online.

"The project team is still assessing the situation and is working closely with the relevant authorities. The number of casualties is still being determined. As of the statement release time, one worker has died."

SP Setia said it deeply regretted the incident, but was unable to provide further details as investigations were ongoing.

According to Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue department chief operations officer Samsol Maarif Saibani, five people have been injured, three of whom were reportedly in critical condition.

A Bangladeshi worker who was trapped in the twisted wreckage was rescued, The Star online reported.

The man, who suffered injuries to his legs, was rushed to University Malaya Medical Centre.
