Missing Malaysia Airlines plane: Oil slick off Malaysia not from missing plane

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - Samples taken from an oil slick off Malaysia are not from missing Malaysia Airlines plane based on a chemistry lab analysis, an official said on Monday.

"The oil is not used for aircraft," Maritime Enforcement Agency spokesman Faridah Shuib said, adding that it was a type used by ships.

The slick, from which the samples were collected, was about 185km north off Malaysia's east coast state of Kelantan and just south of the point where air traffic controllers lost contact with flight MH370.

The plane disappeared en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on Saturday.
