KOTA BARU (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - A company which is carrying out cloud-seeding operations in Kelantan for free has successfully launched salt flares in the skies to induce rain.

AF Jets Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Amrul Nizar Anuar, who was born in the state, said the operations costing RM300,000 (S$101,985) would be borne by the company for the people of Kelantan whose rivers, lakes and water wells were drying up due to the hot weather.

He added that the exercise would be continued over the next 10 days.

AF Jets pilot Mohd Hafiz Abdul Ghafar carried out the cloud seeding sorties for about 60 minutes on Sunday (May 8).

"We launched flares over Peringat and Machang. We will launch more tomorrow (Monday) and we believe the exercise will be successful," he told reporters at the Sultan Ismail Petra airport at Pengkalan Chepa here.

Mr Mohd Hafiz said each flare was packed with 1.5kg of salt mixed with certain solutions.
