PETALING JAYA (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - Malaysia's Education Ministry on Monday (March 21) ordered all schools in Kedah and Perlis to close on Tuesday and Wednesday due to the heatwave.

"It will be decided on Wednesday if schools will remain closed due to the extremely hot weather," Minister Mahdzir Khalid told reporters after being awarded an honorary PhD in Education by Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences (CUCMS).

He said schools are to close if temperatures exceed 39 deg C for three consecutive days.

Malaysia is experiencing hot and dry weather caused by the El Nino phenomenon and the Malaysian Meteorological Department has predicted that the situation will end only in May or June.
