SABAK BERNAM, SELANGOR (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - A grandmother was killed and three of her family members injured after the Proton Saga they were travelling in plunged into a 2m-deep ditch near KM58 of Jalan Teluk Intan-Klang, Sungai Besar, on Saturday (Oct 22).

OCPD Superintendent Nor Azmi Isa said the family was travelling to Kampung Bagan Nira from Sekinchan when the car skidded and crashed into a concrete barrier before plunging into the watery ditch.

Madam Azizah Abdullah, 71, died on the spot while her son Mohd Kusairi Mokhtar, 32, daughter-in-law Nor Hayati Noor, 42, and nine-year-old step-grandson Muhammad Alif Haiqal Mohamad Jon were rescued by passers-by.

The survivors, however, suffered serious injuries.

A team of 16 firemen arrived at the scene 10 minutes after receiving a distress call at about 1pm.

Superintendent Nor Azmi said Mohd Kusairi, who was behind the wheels, could have been feeling sleepy when his car entered the opposite lane.

"He might have lost control of the car before crashing into the barrier. Two victims were sent to Hospital Tengku Ampuan Jemaah for treatment while another was sent to Hospital Tanjong Karang."

Superintendent Nor Azmi added that Azizah's body was also sent to Hospital Tengku Ampuan Jemaah for a post mortem.

Mohd Kusairi is understood to be working as a security guard in Ampang.
