Catch of the day: 150kg grouper

GEORGE TOWN • A Penang fisherman has caught a 150kg grouper, which he sold to a coffee shop owner for RM7,500 (S$2,370).

This was not the first time that the owner of Penang's Ka Bee Cafe, Mr Chew Kean Ghee, has bought a giant grouper from the same fisherman.

Mr Chew said he plans to turn the giant grouper into fish head bee hoon and other dishes. WhatsApp messages showing the 1.8m-long fish are being shared widely among foodies ahead of the feast.

Fisherman Tan Kah Seng, 43, said he caught the fish while trawling at 7pm on Tuesday near Pulau Kendi, a small island to the south of Penang island.

He said it was the first time he had a huge catch at this spot.

He had previously caught giant groupers in Penang waters, but they usually weighed between 80kg and 100kg.

In January 2014, Mr Tan caught a 200kg grouper that was sold to Mr Chew for RM11,000.

Media reports said at the time that diners - including some from Singapore and Hong Kong - rushed to the cafe to enjoy that grouper.
