Suicide bomber kills 19 in Afghanistan

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Afghanistan) • A suicide bomber killed 19 people yesterday when he blew himself up in a northern Afghan market. No group claimed responsibility for the bombing, which comes just before another round of peace talks between the government and Taleban militants is to start.

Chinese ex-prison chief in graft probe

BEIJING • A deputy regional security chief and former head of the prison system in Xinjiang, China, is under investigation for suspected corruption. Xie Hui is being investigated for "suspected serious breaches in discipline", the ruling Communist Party's anti-graft watchdog, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, said in a statement yesterday. Two fined for defaming Thein Sein

YANGON • Two journalists from the Myanmar Herald were found guilty by a Myanmar court on Tuesday of defaming President Thein Sein and fined 1 million kyat (S$1,170) each.

Former chief editor Kyaw Swa Win and deputy chief editor Ant Khaung Min received the maximum fine for violating the newly enacted Media Law in Myanmar, reported the BBC.
