JAKARTA • Seven hikers were killed and two others suffered severe burns when a wildfire broke out on a mountain in Java, an official said yesterday. The group was climbing Mount Lawu when the accident took place on Sunday, said a disaster agency official.

No language exam for foreign workers

JAKARTA • Indonesia will not compel foreign workers to take exams in Bahasa, officials said, denying reports of such plans. Yesterday, a Manpower Ministry official said Jakarta would only recommend that foreigners learn the language.

HK cops in court for assault on protester

HONG KONG• Seven policemen were charged in court yesterday with assaulting a pro-democracy protester. All were released on HK$1,000 (S$180) bail, and are due to appear in court again on Nov 17.
