Indian editor who hosted De Niro faces sexual assault investigation

PANAJI (THE STATESMAN/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - Goa Police today filed a case of rape and outraging of modesty against Tehelka Editor Tarun Tejpal, who has been accused by a woman journalist of sexual assault at a beach resort.

Tehelka is a New Delhi-based English-language investigative magazines, best-known for exposing political corruption.

Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar yesterday ordered a preliminary inquiry into the allegations by the woman journalist that she was sexually abused by Tejpal inside a lift in a five-star hotel in Goa some 10 days ago.

The Telegraph reported that Tejpal was hosting an event in the hotel, and Hollywood big names like Robert de Niro were among his guests.

Mr Parrikar said police have complete authority to investigate the case against Tejpal.

"I have given complete authority to the police to investigate the case. I have told them don't worry whether the person is low profile or high profile. Stature does not count. What counts is the crime. You go by what is correct in law," he said.

If convicted of offences icluding rape by a person in position of trust and authority, Tejpal could face a maximum sentence of life in prison.
