SANYA (China) • Miss Spain was last night crowned Miss World 2015 in a glittering finale at the Crown of Beauty Theatre in China's island resort of Sanya.

Ms Mireia Lalaguna, 23, beat five other finalists, including Ms Sofia Nikitchuk, 22, from Russia who was second, and Ms Maria Harfanti, 23, from Indonesia, who was third, to win the title coveted by the other 113 contestants.

Miss Indonesia also won the Beauty with a Purpose challenge for her initiative which brings clean water to towns and villages in her country.

Ms Lalaguna, a model from Barcelona, has a degree in pharmacology and wants to do a Master of Arts in nutrition, The Telegraph reported.

"Just because I am beautiful on the outside does not mean I am not beautiful on the inside," said Ms Lalaguna after winning Top Model in the finale. "I think I should be the next Miss World because I believe in strong women, I also think I have something inside my heart that I always try to give the best of me," she added.

The finale was hit by controversies after Beijing last month barred Miss Canada, Chinese-born Ms Anastasia Lin, from flying to Sanya from Hong Kong to attend the event.

Ms Lin is an outspoken critic of China's lack of freedom and a follower of the Falungong meditation practice, which Beijing outlawed in 1999.
