SEOUL - Mr Kim Jong Nam, eldest son of the late North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, lived in exile in China and South-east Asia for years after falling out of favour with his father.

He reportedly died in Malaysia on Monday (Feb 13) after being attacked at Kuala Lumpur's airport by two women suspected to be North Korean agents.

Here is a list of sightings of the mysterious man, who reportedly fled his long-time home in Macau out of fear for his life, after his half-brother Jong Un assumed power in late 2011 following their father's death.

Jan 2012: Beijing

A group of South Koreans spotted Mr Kim waiting alone at Beijing's international airport for a flight to Macau, according to South Korea's mainstream newspaper Chosun Ilbo. He acknowledged he was Kim Jong Nam, and said he usually travelled alone. Asked if he was surprised by his father's death a month ago, he reportedly replied: "It's only natural."

Mr Kim's first wife Shin Jong Hui and son Kum Sol reportedly live in Beijing, while his second wife Lee Hye Kyong and their two children - son Han Sol and daughter Sol Hui - live in Macau.

2012: Singapore

Mr Kim moved from Macau to Singapore in late January, according to Chosun Ilbo, citing government sources. He reportedly had to flee Macau as his home was exposed and chose Singapore for ease of travel to Europe, where his son Han Sol was attending university. Another source in Singapore spotted Mr Kim three times within seven months - twice at the lobby of Marina Bay Sands hotel and once along Orchard Road.

Jan 2014: Kuala Lumpur

Mr Kim was spotted at a restaurant in Kuala Lumpur, Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper reported, citing sources. The paper said he lived in Singapore, but travels in the region. He reportedly became a recluse after his close uncle Jang Song Thaek was executed on his brother's orders a month ago, but may have resurfaced as he felt his life was no longer in danger.

May 2014: Jakarta

Mr Kim showed up at an Italian restaurant located in Korea-owned Lotte Shopping Mall in Jakarta, according to South Korean cable news channel YTN. The channel showed a photo of him posing with the restaurant's chef. He was reportedly accompanied by a woman who appeared to be in her 30s.

Sept 2014: Paris

South Korean tourists said they saw Mr Kim at the lavish hotel Le Meridien Etoile in Paris, with a woman who appeared to be in her 30s, reported Chosun Ilbo. He was believed to be visiting his son Han Sol, who was studying there. When approached by a South Korean reporter, he said he did not know much about President Kim Jong Un or what was happening in North Korea.
