Volcanic lightning observed from Tarumizu city in Kagoshima prefecture in south-western Japan as Mount Sakurajima erupted yesterday with a fiery blast that sent fountains of lava into the night sky. The Japan Meteorological Agency said the volcano, which is about 50km from Kyushu Electric Power's Sendai nuclear plant in the prefecture, erupted at 6.56pm. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
