Firefighters looking for victims under collapsed houses in the aftermath of a magnitude-6.5 earthquake in Mashiki town, Kumamoto prefecture, in south-western Japan yesterday.

The quake killed nine people, injured at least 1,000 and cut power and water supplies across the region, forcing the temporary shutdown of several car and electronics factories.

By yesterday afternoon, more than 130 aftershocks had hit the area around the city of Kumamoto.
