6.5-magnitude earthquake hits off Fiji: USGS

HONG KONG (AFP) - A shallow 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck the South Pacific off the coast of Fiji on Saturday, the US Geological Survey said, but it triggered no tsunami warnings.

The quake hit at a depth of 10km some 224km from Fiji at 1552 GMT (11.52pm Singapore time), the USGS said.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

"Based on all the available data... there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake," the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said in a statement.
