Former Chongqing party boss Bo Xilai has made his first public appearance in 17 months when he stood trial on Thursday morning in eastern Jinan city.

Netizens, who have been glued to their computers for live updates via the court's microblog, remarked how he looked haggard and slightly older.

The picture, issued by the Jinan court and shown on state media, showed a clean-shaven Bo standing in the dock without handcuffs, his hands crossed in front of him. He was flanked by two policemen.
