ZHENGZHOU (HENAN) • In a massive hangar just outside Zhengzhou, engineers could be seen working furiously to put the finishing touches to a two-storey-high tube resembling a super-sized jet engine.

But the 6.7m-diameter machine is meant for use underground, not up in the air.
