People gathering to observe the Guinness World Record attempt for the most lights on an artificial Christmas tree in Canberra, Australia, late last Thursday.

The 22m tree set a new record with 518,838 lights, beating the previous record held for five years by Universal Studios Japan in Osaka.

The tree was erected by Mr David Richards, a Canberra-based lawyer and businessman, who commissioned the display to raise money for research into sudden infant death syndrome.
