A controversial move by the Australian state of Victoria to develop closer commercial ties with China has caused an angry response from the federal government, which has shown increasing wariness of doing business with Beijing.

Two years ago, Victoria's Labor government signed up to China's globe-spanning Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), saying this would boost the state's economy and promote jobs.
