An Australian man had to hike 140km through the remote outback, after crashing his car last Wednesday (Aug 30).

Local media 9News reported that Mr Thomas Mason, 21, had to make that arduous trek - equivalent to 350 rounds around a running track - after he crashed his car while avoiding some wild camels.

He had been working as a technician near the border of Northern Territory and South Australia, and was passing Yulara when the accident happened.

While he escaped unscathed, Mr Mason was stuck with no water in one of Australia's harshest terrains.

There was no phone reception either.

He knew he had to get onto the highway to find help or he might die, so he began walking with just a few pieces of clothing, a torchlight and no food, according to the 9News.

"It definitely went through my mind, thinking how long would it take for someone to realise I'm not actually coming anymore," Mr Mason told 9News.

While he found a water tank and a bottle of water on the way, it was not enough and he had to resort to drinking his own urine to hydrate.

"There was about three or four times on the dirt road that I was ready to stop and give up completely," he said.

Mr Mason eventually reached a main road on Friday (Sept 1) night, after 60 hours in the outback, and managed to get in touch with his anxious parents.
