Task force to ensure Proton's recovery

KUALA LUMPUR • A six-member task force was yesterday named to ensure the business recovery plan of struggling national carmaker Proton is successful.

It will monitor a strategic plan to boost domestic market share and enter other markets.

Chinese graft buster charged with corruption

BEIJING • A former senior Chinese provincial official overseeing graft-busting efforts will himself be charged with corruption for allegedly taking more than 1.4 million yuan (S$294,000) in bribes and gifts, state media said yesterday.

Fang Keyou of Anhui province was a deputy head of the graft inspection teams that have been sent across China as part of a war on corruption.

Magnitude 6 quake hits Japan's Kyushu island

TOKYO • An earthquake of magnitude 6 hit Kyushu island in Japan yesterday, shaking buildings and leading to the suspension of some train services as a precaution. There were no immediate reports of any serious damage or injuries.
