China official tied to ex-security czar jailed

BEIJING • China has jailed former vice-minister of public security Li Dongsheng for 15 years, state media yesterday said, the latest official tied to ousted security czar Zhou Yongkang to be sentenced for corruption offences.

Li went on trial at a Tianjin court last October, charged with illegally accepting almost 22 million yuan (S$4.8 million) worth of assets.

China gets new foreign exchange head

BEIJING • China's Cabinet has named Mr Pan Gongsheng, a deputy governor of the country's central bank, as its new top foreign exchange regulator to manage the country's currency reserves and steer yuan reforms.

Mr Pan will replace Mr Yi Gang as head of China's State Administration of Foreign Exchange, the Cabinet said yesterday.

Whales stranded on Indian beach die

CHENNAI (India) • Dozens of whales have died after stranding themselves on a southern Indian beach, a forestry official said yesterday, with local fishermen struggling to save others.
