5,000 rally against Indian student's arrest

NEW DELHI • Thousands of people rallied in New Delhi yesterday to protest against the arrest of an Indian student for sedition, as a bitter row over freedom of speech spilled into the capital's streets.

An estimated 5,000 people, chanting "release Kanhaiya Kumar" and "down with state terrorism", marched through the city centre in one of the biggest student protests that India has seen in years.

Groom killed by bullet 'from wedding party'

NEW DELHI • A groom was killed by a bullet apparently fired by celebrating members of his wedding party in northern India, a local police officer said yesterday.

Mr Amit Rastogi, 28, was fatally struck on Wednesday in Uttar Pradesh state while leading the party to his bride's house.

Indonesia to block Tumblr website

JAKARTA • The Indonesian government announced a plan to block microblogging website Tumblr because of explicit content such as pornography and material referencing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender relationships.

The Communications and Information Ministry said it had informed Tumblr that the website would be blocked until it agreed to remove explicit content.
