SINGAPORE - Escalators are ubiquitous in any city, and we use them almost every day.
But for a small number of people, escalator accidents have resulted in injuries and even death.
On Saturday (March 25), 18 people were injured after a 45m-long escalator in a Mong Kok mall suddenly reversed.
Here are other accidents that grabbed headlines.
1. Grandmother drops baby
A four-month-old baby fell over the side of an escalator of a mall in Shanghai and died in November last year.
His grandmother, who was holding him, had lost her balance.

2. Coma after escalator fall
A 64-year-old retiree fell into a coma after falling at a Bishan MRT escalator and hitting his head on a step.
The retiree woke two months after the accident, which happened on Nov 12 last year near the station's Exit D.

3. Wheelchair-bound after fall into escalator gap
Ms Azlin Amran became paralysed from the waist down after falling into an escalator gap at the Tanah Merah MRT station in 2013.
A lawsuit she brought against SMRT was settled out of court.

4. Fell from escalator while grabbing hat
An American woman, Jenny Santos, fell to her death from an escalator in the World Trade Center while trying to grab her twin sister's hat.
She managed to grab the hat in midair, but fell over the escalator railing, the New York Daily News reported.
5. Woman "eaten" by escalator
A woman was killed after she plunged through flooring over an escalator in a Chinese department store in 2015.
A panel in the floor gave way as she stepped off the escalator in a Hubei mall. She was holding her young son, but she pushed him to safety as she fell.

6. Boy's genitals caught
A three-year-old boy's genitals were caught in a Perak supermarket escalator last year.
The fabric of his pants and the tip of his penis were caught when he sat on the steps of the escalator.
