Tony Tan: Choose the right man to rally Singaporeans

Presidential hopeful Tony Tan is confident that Singaporeans will make an informed choice on the person who will be best able to execute the custodial responsibilities of the President and rally Singaporeans through the looming economic crisis.

Speaking a day after he was deemed eligible to contest for the presidency, Dr Tan warned that the deep structural economic problems in the US and Europe might lead to a crisis in Asia if policymakers are unable to resolve these issues.

'These uncertain times are a stark reminder of the custodial responsibilities of the president,' he said.

Dr Tan reminded Singaporeans that while the campaign will run for nine days, the president's term of office is six years.

'I am confident Singaporeans will make an informed choice on Aug 27 on who will be able to execute the custodial responsibilities of the president and other responsibilities over the next six years,' he said.

If he is elected, he pledged to work with the government, all political parties and civil society to rally Singaporeans to overcome the crisis.

Dr Tan collected his certificate of eligibility from the Elections Department at 9.30am on Friday. He was accompanied by his wife Mary and around 40 supporters.
