Dr William Tan hopes to raise at least $70,000 for The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund on Sept 26 by towing children around a running track.
Using a reclining cycle sponsored by Mr Bean, the soya drink manufacturer, Dr Tan will tow a child sitting in a carrier attached to the cycle. Each lap will be 400m and parents can donate whatever amount they like.
He had originally wanted to perform this Cycle Of Hope project for 24 hours to raise $100,000.
But because he has been diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL), a form of blood cancer, his doctors fear a 24-hour stint would be too strenuous. So the target now is 12 hours to raise $70,000.
Anyone who wants to help, but does not turn up with a child for the ride, can send a cheque made out to 'School Pocket Money Fund'.
Send your cheques to Research Communication International, 20 Upper Circular Road, #02-21 The Riverwalk, Singapore 058416. Please put 'Cycle Of Hope' on the back of the cheque.
For parents of young children who would like a ride, the Sept 26 event will be held at the National University of Singapore's Sports Complex. More details will be announced nearer the date. Well-wishers and supporters are also welcome.
