CHRISTMAS is a season for giving and one local business is making sure that those less fortunate will benefit.
The Kopitiam Group has pledged to donate all takings from sales generated at its new 'Little China' food outlet in Boon Tat Street between today and Dec 31 to The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund.
The fund provides assistance to needy children from low-income families in Singapore.
Mr Tan said that 'a minimum of $10,000' is expected to be generated for the fund from this venture.
A leading player in Singapore's foodcourt business, the Kopitiam Group is celebrating its 20th anniversary as well as the official opening of its latest food concept - a 24-hour outlet known as 'Little China' at local food centre Lau Pa Sat.
In keeping with the festive spirit, taxi drivers also received a helping hand.
Between 11pm-12pm yesterday, free lunches were provided to any taxi driver who turned up with their vocational licences.
'When launching this project, the first group of people we thought of were taxi drivers,' said the group's managing director Alden Tan.
'In such trying times with the economic downturn, they will be the next group to be hit hard...
'This small gesture is a way of showing our appreciation for them.'
For SMRT cab driver Steven Chua, 61, the meal offered a welcome respite.
'Business is down...I am really feeling the pinch,' he said.
'Since the start of this month, I have to work a few extra hours every day just to make up for the loss of income.'
