INVESTIGATIONS were unable to pin down exactly how Mas Selamat Kastari left the Whitley Road Detention Centre after he climbed out of the toilet window.

TWO days after details of Mas Selamat Kastari's escape emerged, Singaporeans remain divided on whether the Government has demonstrated accountability over the incident.
THE question of whether Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng should offer to resign cropped up among Singaporeans interviewed yesterday, on the disclosures in Parliament about terrorist leader Mas Selamat Kastari's escape.

IT IS almost a ritual - politicians falling on their swords to appease public anger when the unexpected happens or policies go wrong. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong yesterday made it clear that he did not think it wise for Singapore to engage in such political shows.

A day after Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng gave his ministerial statement on JI fugitive Mas Selamat Kastari's escape, Singapore are trying to come to terms with how seemingly simple it was. (2:58)

The COI's recommendations
The Government has accepted a slew of recommendations put forth by the Committee of Inquiry (COI). Among them - centralising the command and control of the Whitley Road detention centre under the Internal Security Department and building a new detention facility in Changi Prison for political detainees.

Mas Selamat's escape not an inside job
The Committee of inquiry (COI) has found no evidence of connivance, collusion or help given to Mas Selamat, on the part of any individual. So there will be no criminal charges filed on any persons. But Mr Wong stressed that this does not mean that the officers accountable for the lapse will not be dealt with.

'No witch-hunt': PM Lee
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said the last thing Singapore needs is a witch-hunt which'll damage and demoralise the country's intelligence and security agencies.
