Bahrain penalised

INDIA'S girls' basketball team were awarded a walkover in their game against Bahrain yesterday.

This, after the technical official in charge of the match deemed the Bahrainis to be in violation of world body Fiba's dress code.

The team were wearing long pants. According to the International Basketball Federation's rules and regulations, players must compete in shorts.

Said AYG organising committee spokesman Rhonda Koh: 'The Bahrain team forfeited the game as they were unable to fulfil the dress code rule for the match.'

The Games' official website reported that India were credited with a 33-0 win.

Darren stays in lead

SINGAPORE Byte CII sailor Darren Choy continued his fine start at the Asian Youth Games by finishing second and first in his two races yesterday. He has four points and leads closest rival Pongwichean Supakon of Thailand by three points after five races.

Darren's teammate, Najwa Jumali, matched his results in the girls' event. She is second, three points behind Thai Jittiwa Thanawitwilat, who has six points.

S'pore boys recover

SINGAPORE'S Melvin Goh and Qing Shan succumbed to nerves and lost 17-21, 14-21 to Sri Lanka in their beach volleyball opener at Sentosa's Siloso Beach yesterday. But they made amends later by beating Japan 21-14, 21-18.

The girls' team of Dorita Peng and Tan Yi Ting beat Mongolia 21-13, 21-7.

China beat hosts

SINGAPORE'S boys and girls' basketball teams lost to China in their opening group matches at Anglican High School yesterday.

The Chinese boys won 34-21 while their girls crushed Singapore 33-7.
