CHINA showed their invincibility in table tennis when they were guaranteed a four-gold sweep even before the start of yesterday's mixed doubles, and boys and girls' singles finals.
Having secured the mixed team gold last Saturday, the Chinese added a second on the final day of competition in the mixed doubles when Yin Hang and Gu Yuting defeated Cheng Jingqi and Chen Meng 12-10, 6-11, 11-7, 11-7.
Less than an hour later, Chen Meng turned the tables on Yuting in the girls' singles final with a 9-11, 11-8, 11-5, 11-5, 11-8 win at the Toa Payoh Sports Hall.
Earlier in the day, Chen Meng had survived two match points in her 11-8, 11-5, 6-11, 13-11, 5-11, 4-11, 13-11 semi-final win over Japanese chopper Ayuka Tanioka - the paddler that came closest to spoiling China's party.
While some of the lengthy rallies in the final resembled a training session between two national teammates, both players knew there was a lot more at stake.
Yuting acknowledged that the abundance of talented paddlers in China was a key reason why she had high expectations of herself on her international debut.
She said: 'When I was ahead, I thought of winning and became afraid of losing.
'It's important to control such thoughts but sometimes you can't help but think, 'I've got to grab this chance'.'
One paddler who made the most of his opportunities was Yin Hang - the only player to remain unbeaten throughout the tournament.
He won his third gold with an 11-9, 11-5, 2-11, 11-9, 13-11 win over Jingqi in the boys' singles final.
Yin Hang, who pumped both fists and let out a primal roar after taking the title with an inside-out forehand winner, said: 'These Games were a test for me. I'm very happy and honoured to have beaten tough opponents.'
