MEASURES to cool the property market appear to have had some effect in tempering market exuberance for private homes, said National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan on Monday.

KUALA LUMPUR - THOUSANDS of Malaysian boys will begin the journey into adulthood at mass circumcision ceremonies that start this month throughout this mainly Muslim Southeast Asian nation.

The events, held to coincide with the year-end school holidays which run into December, are a rite of passage for Muslim boys aged between 6 and 12 and whose faith requires removing the foreskin of the penis.

SYDNEY - MORE than 100, and possibly hundreds, of Antarctic icebergs are floating towards New Zealand in a rare event which has prompted a shipping warning, officials said on Monday.

An Australian Antarctic Division glaciologist said the ice chunks, spotted by satellite photography, had passed the Auckland Islands and were heading towards the main South Island, about 450 kilometres northeast.

A PART-TIME yoga instructress was charged on Monday with slashing her husband with a kitchen knife.

Alexandra Chan, 27, a permanent resident, is alleged to have slashed Mr Tang Siu Tong, 38, on his right hand and right knee cap at their condominium at Upper Bukit Timah Road on Sunday.

12,000 homes over 5 years

THE Housing Board (HDB) will offer an estimated 10,000 to 12,000 flats yearly for the next five years to meet growing demand and ensure sufficient housing, said National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan on Monday.

But this number is a projection, he emphasised. 'What actually happens a few years down the road is unknown. Also, demand is not constant; it varies from year to year, depending on economic and other factors,' he said.

TWO youths were sentenced to reformative training on Monday for grievously hurting an 18-year-old student who died four days after the attack earlier this year.

Joshua Leong Wei Jun and Kan Zhan Peng, both 20, were found suitable for Reformative Training Centre but probation was ruled out for them as well as Hongkong passport-holder Liu Wing Sing, also 20. But the Community Court postponed Liu's sentencing to Jan 11 after the prosecution said that foreigners were not suitable for RTC, citing a High Court case.
