JBJ must be careful if he wishes to espouse Singapore's cause
I REFER to yesterday's report and applaud veteran opposition politician J.B. Jeyaretnam's challenge to the Government to hold a by-election in Jurong GRC, although calling for one so soon after MP Ong Chit Chung's death is somewhat inappropriate ('JBJ challenges Govt to call by-election in late MP's ward').

What I find more disconcerting is his quote in the report: 'All these laws were designed and passed by those who...stand to benefit under the scheme. The laws have only one object - to keep the minority that you represent in power.' (Please see the Editor's note). I assume the remark is an abridged quote from Mr Jeyaretnam's open letter. There are things that I am dissatisfied with regarding the People's Action Party (PAP) as well, but this does not mean that I can make such an inappropriate remark, which is dangerous, about the PAP; and if such remarks are made at all, there should be substantial evidence to back them up, or they should not be uttered at all.

Mr Jeyaretnam - and Singaporeans as a whole - are best served by making more carefully considered challenges to the Government.

If he finds himself entangled in a lawsuit again, he will not be able to further the interests of Singaporeans as he claims. A bankrupt cannot stand for election, for one. Plus the hours put in to prepare a defence for a lawsuit would be better spent researching and evaluating current policies and proposing better ones.

At over 80 years of age, Mr Jeyaretnam does not have much time left, going by average life expectancy. He should act and plan more carefully to ensure that there are successors who share his vision for Singapore and who will struggle to realise it long after he is gone.

EDITOR'S NOTE: The quote by Mr Jeyaretnam is taken verbatim from his open letter. Earlier in the same letter however, he referred to the 'rule by an elite minority that you represent'.
