Don't hurt, help
'The poor need an economic leg-up, not a kidney buy-out.'

MADAM LAM YAR EE: 'Many of the letters so far have supported the legalisation of organ trading. Who are these voices? They are those who can afford to buy an organ. Would these same people sell their organs if not compelled to do so? We need to ask ourselves who represents the poor - who have no voice and little choice - in this unfair bargain. The poor need an economic leg-up, not a kidney buy-out. They are often ill-informed on the risks and may be pressured into the sale. Who can ensure the seller enters the sale fully informed and of his own volition? Who will ensure the seller receives adequate care, not just post-surgery but for years after? Legalising organ trading opens up a Pandora's box of questions that need not be asked if we just remember that everyone's body is sacred. The Health Ministry needs to remove double standards by disciplining Singaporeans who return after participating in organ trading.'
