MONDAY'S report, 'Mahathir on Malays in economic zone' confirms my belief that the former Malaysian prime minister derives pleasure in driving a wedge between Singaporeans and Malaysians. To him, Singaporeans are up to no good when it comes to doing business with Malaysia.
His assertion that Singapore's investment in the Iskandar Malaysia project would eventually force the Malays to live in the forest is a gross insult to all Malaysians, especially the Malays.
I have Malay Malaysian friends who believe in the paramount importance of being engaged in a global economy. They know the influx of foreign participation in their country's economic ventures can stimulate growth and create more jobs.
Being more educated and knowledgeable, the horizons of Malay Malaysians in business and technology have widened, and this augurs well for the future.
Dr Mahathir should not belittle the Malays by instilling the fear factor in them.
As a prominent statesman, he should encourage and motivate them to scale greater heights in the face of globalisation.
He should know that his attempt to sow discord between the two countries will not work, given the warm bilateral ties.
