IT WAS raining when I read the report about the decommissioning of our six missile gunboats. Many Singaporeans from an older generation like mine had become accustomed to the silhouette of these six beautiful 'ladies'; the unmistakable radar dome in mid-ship, the 57mm Bofor gun near the bow and the clean Harpoon tubes in the stern.
Our navy boats are always at the frontline battling the elements. These boats are home to our NS men and women who lived on board for weeks at a time. Faithfully, these boats bring our men and women safely back from the sea after every mission.
Hopefully, our navy can recycle these boats so that some part of them will always remain with us.
Thirty-three years is a long time. They have served more admirals and SAF chiefs than any other military equipment. Thank you, ladies.
